Specialized Units
The Bridgeport Police Department's Motorcycle Unit consists of three Patrol Officers, one on each Patrol Team. The officers were trained in operating a motorcycle while performing police duties. The training requires an initial forty hour instruction course along with a sixteen hour recertification course every two years. The training is an intense program designed to educate the motorcycle operator on how to maneuver a motorcycle in the tight confines of city traffic and streets.
The primary duties of the motorcycle unit are the enforcement of West Virginia Traffic Laws along with responding to additional calls for service. The motorcycle unit is also used for traffic control and escorting parades and other events which require city streets to be closed down.
